Delegation from India’s Ministry of Labour and Employment observes a Job Corps student cutting and sealing glass.

The Center hosted members of the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Republic of India on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.

The Ministry delegation toured the center and met with Long Beach Job Corps students and staff to learn more about the U.S. Department of Labor’s residential career technical training and program for income-eligible young people ages 16 through 24.

Long Beach Job Corps Hosts Recycling Drive Friday

The Center students will join millions of youth around the world by hosting a drive as one of their Global Youth Services Day projects on Friday, April 20, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Global Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, is an annual event that organizes youth to take action by improving their communities through service.

Long Beach Job Corps Student Matthew Moody to Travel to China

Student Matthew Moody is ecstatic. Matthew is one of 4 students chosen to represent the Job Corps Program on an 11 day visit to China as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Matthew was nominated by staff for his outstanding leadership skills, accomplishments at Job Corps, friendliness, communication skills and his desire to embark on an adventure across the globe. Matthew submitted a written application, was selected to participate in a teleconference, and was soon notified that he is one of the chosen students. Three of the students selected represent Job Corps Centers that are located in the Western Region.

The Student Government Association celebrated Veterans Day by honoring staff members who have served in the military. Students conducted an outdoor ceremony highlighting each staff member’s service to our country and pinned a red, white, and blue ribbon on each.

Students at the Long Beach Job Corps Center anxiously awaited the receipt of their certificates of completion for Advanced Leadership class. What they didn’t know was that their certificates would be presented by a special guest, Mr. Eddie Jones, President of the Los Angeles Civil Rights Association.

Mitra Vazeen was the recipient of a “Go Long Beach” Award presented to her on March 6, 2013 by Dr. , City of Long Beach Vice-Mayor.

Ms. Vazeen is one of several notable Long Beach residents honored by Dr. Robert Garcia at the downtown law offices of Keesal, Young, and Logan. Ms. Vazeen received the award because she makes a significant impact in the city of Long Beach for leading staff and students to success.

Ms. Vazeen serves as the Center Director of Long Beach Job Corps and has led the Long Beach Job Corps Center since February 2012. The center has flourished under her leadership and is currently ranked #13 out of 122 Job Corps Centers in the United States. The Long Beach Job Corps Center is operated by Odle Management for the Department of Labor.

According to Ms. Vazeen, “what makes this event even more special is sharing the occasion with one of our alumni, Isaac Romero”. Romero is proof of the success of the Job Corps program. “We are so proud of Isaac, who is now a Field Deputy Assistant with the office of Dr. Garcia.”

Ms. Vazeen was born in Tehran, Iran and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education from George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. She taught grades k-12, taught in the Peace Corps and also at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon.

Long Beach Job Corps Center has 300 students and offers career technical training in automotive technician, cement mason, certified nurse assistant/home aide, clinical medical assistant, facilities maintenance, glazing, medical office support, painting, and pharmacy technician.

Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps is the nation’s largest career technical training and education program for income-eligible students ages 16 through 24. Job Corps is a U.S. Department of Labor Equal Opportunity Employer Program.

Twenty-five SIATech High School students in Long Beach looked forward all week to Friday the 13th with excitement. Friday is the day they would proudly walk across the stage to finally receive their diplomas.

SIATech, a charter school that partners with Long Beach Job Corps Center and is located locally on the campus, conducted a commencement ceremony for students. Family members, community members and current Job Corps students were on hand to recognize these students’ achievements.

Fourteen Long Beach Job Corps students had the opportunity of their lives on Saturday! Dressed in their best attire, students were treated to an afternoon of insight and inspiration.

Students attended the Pre-Grammy Celebration, which included a brunch, a live interview and private concert by Janelle Monae at the Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The event was sponsored by Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry, the Recording Academy, and the Grammy Museum.

Long Beach Job Corps Center celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Job Corps Program on National Commencement Day on Friday. Local officials, employers, community leaders, graduates, and alumni attended the ceremony at Long Beach Job Corps Center.

The center hosted National Commencement Day, along with 124 centers across the country. Mayor Robert Garcia addressed the 100 graduates at Long Beach Job Corps Center as the program marked its 50th year. Mr. Roberto Uranga, City of Long Beach 7th District City Council Member also made remarks at the center, which is located in the district he represents. Mr. Eric Boyd, Deputy District Director of Congresswoman Janice Hahn’s office and Mr. Brian Daher, Department of Labor San Francisco Regional Director offered congratulatory remarks to the graduates.

Eight Long Beach Job Corps employees recently completed Community Emergency Response (C. E. R.T.) Training. Urged on by their fellow staff member, Gabriel Fischman, the group members can now help serve our community, including students and staff on center in case a disaster strikes.
